Childhood memories will invoke different things for different people, different toys, TV shows and fashions. Some of these things will be remembered by many. Find ten people who grew up in the 80’s and the chances are they’ll all remember the following.
Soda Streams were the kitchen accessory to have in the 80’s. This was one kitchen accessory that defiantly appealed more to the kid than the adult though. If you were the one who’d get stuck with the cleaning up it wasn’t quite so much fun. Washing the jars could take forever and you’d spend days finding sticky syrup everywhere. Although the end result never tasted quite as good as the stuff in the shops, the sodastream was always a great way to pass a lazy summer day.
The little blue creatures called Smurfs were one of the most iconic cartoons of the 80’s. This little society of small blue creatures were predominantly male. The standard uniform of the Smurf was a white hat and a white pair of trousers. Like any good cartoon life was simple for these little things. There was of course the resident bad guy called Gargamel. The dwarfs from Snow White were very similar to the Smurfs especially when it came to the representation of humanity and emotions. Their idyllic life kept millions of children glued to their televisions throughout the 80’s and they still remain a huge part of pop culture today.
There were plenty of must have accessories in the 80’s but one of the most common was the snap bracelet. Made from either a thin strip of metal or plastic they were covered in brightly coloured material. They could be straighten out then hit against a sold object to make them curl up forming a bracelet. This might seem like a slightly violent fashion accessory for a child but compared to today it’s fairly tame. These little accessories were cheap and came in lots of different colours and patterns. The bright patterns and the violent nature meant the appealed equally to boys and girls.
